What is vetFOAM?

vetFOAM is the concept, #vetFOAMed is the Twitter hashtag

"FOAM stands for Free Open Access Meducation – Medical education for anyone, anywhere, anytime." (Life in The Fast Lane)

Free open access medical educational as a concept in itself is not a new thing. However with the growth of the internet and social and other media outlets, learning in medical education has and will undoubtedly continue to evolve. FOAM is a rapidly expanding and exciting movement in human medicine that encompasses a variety of resources including blogs, podcasts, social media sites, videos and so on.

"FOAM should not be seen as a teaching philosophy or strategy, but rather as a globally accessible crowd-sourced educational adjunct providing inline (contextual) and offline (asynchronous) content to augment traditional educational principles." (Life in The Fast Lane)

As someone who follows human medicine FOAM resources in the areas of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care with huge interest and admiration, the FOAM movement to me is one that is undoubtedly inspiring and motivational - and it is limitless!

The concept of FOAM in veterinary medicine is still really at an extremely early stage with many online/media educational resources requiring paid-for subscriptions, although some providers, journals etc. do make some resources free open access for which they are to be commended. However it is my belief that as time goes by the FOAM movement cannot help but grow within veterinary medicine too.

This website has been set up to act as a register/database of veterinary free open access medical educational resources across multiple species. Although relatively sparse at its inception, I have every faith that its content will grow in time.

If you would like to recommend any free veterinary educational resources for inclusion please contact me on shailen@vetfoamed.com or using the Contact page.
